I have a Sony DVD-RW DVR-810A dual layer 16x DVD burner. I recently had some issues where it wouldn't burn CD's, just DVD's. So I brought it back to CompUSA to have them install a new one as I still had a warranty. Well. The new one just doesn't work at all. I can put a disc in, it can read the disc, it will ask me if I want to burn a disc, but it just won't burn. I add video ts files and the green light flashes and the buffer turns on, yet it can't get past 1% completion on any DVD.

Anyone have any suggestions as I do not want to take this damn thing back to CompUSA so that they "diagnose" the problem over the span of another week.

PS: I upgraded my firmware this morning and it still didn;t work.

I had a similiar problem with a drive that reads dvds/cds but only wrote to cd.  Swapped in a new drive and still had the same problem.  Restored to the factory install image of Windows and still had the problem.  Somehow one of the registry settings associated with the drive got messed up and the only way to truly reset it was to wipe my hard drive and do a completely new installation of the operating system.

Or at least thats what I understand happened.

It is either the tool you are using to burn, the media or the burner.

Burners can be tricky.  I would try to uninstall it completely and do a freash install.  I had a similar problem once and that worked for me.  I know they're probably not much help, but have you called Sony Tech Support?  Also, before you do any of this, try another burning program and see if it's a Nero issue.

Good luck!

I suggest removing the drive and smashing the shit out of it.  It'd work for me

Get a BenQ.  They're cheap and they work.

Aside from the BenQ, anyone have advise for a new DVD burner?  My Pioneer started spitting out coasters and I know the signs.  It is time for a new one.  I lost count on how many I have been through and have tried everything.  It doesn't seem to matter, to me that is.

Thank you both.  I have ~$200 in Best BUy cards, hopefully they have this.  If not, save the cards.  I want something good that will last.
